Quick answer
The Professional Visit Pass (PVP) lets a foreign professional carry out a temporary assignment for a Malaysian company — training, consultancy, installation or technical support — while remaining employed and paid by their overseas employer. It is issued for six months and may be renewed once for another six, to a maximum of 12 months. Since March 2026, companies in manufacturing and selected services under MIDA's purview apply through the MIDA Expatriate System (MES), with a standard processing time of 15 working days.

Overview
Not every foreign professional coming to Malaysia is being hired. Many are engineers installing machinery, trainers transferring know-how, consultants on a project, or technicians commissioning equipment — while still employed by their company overseas. The Professional Visit Pass is designed for exactly that.
The pass is sponsored by the Malaysian company receiving the service and applied for before the professional enters Malaysia. It is issued for six months and, at Immigration's discretion, renewable for a further six, so the assignment cannot exceed twelve months. The holder may only work for the sponsoring company and cannot be assigned to any other entity.
The channel depends on the sponsor. Since March 2026, companies in manufacturing and selected services under MIDA's regulatory purview apply through the MIDA Expatriate System (MES) with a standard 15-working-day processing time; other companies apply through ESD. Getting the channel right at the start avoids restarting the application.
Who needs this
- Factories bringing in overseas engineers for installation or commissioning
- Companies hosting overseas trainers or consultants
- Project owners needing foreign technical specialists for a defined period

PVP or Employment Pass — which one your assignment actually needs
The Professional Visit Pass and the Employment Pass answer two different questions. The Employment Pass is for someone who joins a Malaysian company's payroll. The Professional Visit Pass is for someone who stays employed and paid by an overseas company and comes to Malaysia to carry out a specific assignment for a Malaysian host — commissioning equipment, transferring technical knowledge, auditing a plant, training a local team.
That distinction drives everything else. Because the expatriate is not on a Malaysian payroll, the PVP carries no minimum salary threshold — the salary tests that govern Employment Pass categories simply do not apply. In exchange, the pass is short: six months initially, extendable at the immigration officer's discretion by a further six, for a maximum stay of twelve months.
The PVP is also tightly bound. It is issued for one sponsor and one assignment named in the approval. The holder cannot work for another company, take on unrelated work alongside it, or be quietly redeployed to a different project. Where the work is genuinely open-ended, an Employment Pass is the correct instrument and a PVP will only postpone the problem.
| Professional Visit Pass | Employment Pass | |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays the salary | The overseas employer | The Malaysian company |
| Minimum salary | None | RM5,000 – RM20,000+ by category |
| Maximum stay | 12 months (6 + 6) | Up to 60 months per application |
| Tied to | One sponsor, one assignment | One Malaysian employer |
| Dependants | Not available | Available in all three categories |
| Applied for | Before entering Malaysia | Before entering Malaysia |
A PVP suits a defined, time-boxed assignment. Open-ended work for a Malaysian entity needs an Employment Pass.
03
Where PVP applications go wrong
The most common refusal is a mismatch between the stated assignment and the supporting documents. The approval is granted for a described piece of work, so the service agreement between the overseas employer and the Malaysian sponsor, the expatriate's expertise, and the justification for why a local cannot do the work all have to tell the same story.
The second is timing. A PVP must be applied for before the expatriate enters Malaysia. Arriving on a social visit pass and applying from inside the country is not the route, and converting afterwards is not something to rely on.
The third is the twelve-month ceiling. Because the second six months is discretionary rather than automatic, an assignment planned around a full year has no margin. Where the work will genuinely run past twelve months, the right decision — made early — is to structure it as an Employment Pass from the start.
